UL’s Ellyson earns Sun Belt honor again

Another week, another honor for UL’s Summer Ellyson.

The Ragin’ Cajuns junior pitcher picked up her fourth consecutive – and seventh overall in 2019 – Community Coffee Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week award on Tuesday.

The former Teurlings Catholic star recorded four victories last week, including all three games of a Sun Belt series for the second straight weekend. Ellyson helped the Cajuns extended their win streak to 23 games and are now a SBC-record 24-0 in conference play.

In four games, Ellyson surrendered only two runs on nine hits in 22-1/3 innings while striking out 29 batters. This past week Ellyson also became the first Ragin’ Cajuns star to reach 30 wins since Jordan Wallace accomplished the same feat back in 2013.

“Summer has really matured as a pitcher and as a person,” UL head coach Gerry Glasco said in a release. “She can handle just about anything you throw at her right now. She’s just really special in her poise and the way she handles adversity.”

Ellyson leads the conference and ranks Top 10 nationally in every major pitching category — including a nation-high 33 wins.

Ellyson’s seven weekly honors is the most for a Ragin’ Cajuns pitcher in a single season since Ashley Brignac received the exact amount in 2011 and Ellyson is just one off the program record eight claimed by Brooke Mitchell back in 2004.

No. 8 UL (46-4, 24-0 SBC) concludes the regular season this weekend with a three-game conference series at in-state foe UL Monroe.
