Sean Payton is retiring.

In his 15 seasons at the helm of the New Orleans Saints, Payton led the franchise to unprecedented success compiling a 152-89 overall record and of course one Super Bowl championship.

Under Payton, the Saints also made the playoffs nine times, won the NFC South division seven times (including four in a row from 2017-2020) and advanced to the NFC Championship Game three times (2006, 2009 and 2018).

Even with the retirement of NFL record-setting quarterback Drew Brees, being forced to start four different quarterbacks, dealing with two COVID-19 outbreaks and numerous other injuries, Payton still guided the team to a 9-8 overall record during the 2021 season.

Payton, who was named AP Coach of the Year in 2006, was hired by the Saints following the Hurricane Katrina-impacted 2005 season. Payton found his quarterback when the team signed Drew Brees and the two would rewrite the NFL’s offensive record books.

The news of Payton’s retirement was first announced by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and confirmed by both Associated Press’ Mike Triplett and New Orleans Football’s Nick Underhill.

The Saints announced a press conference will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
