The University of Louisiana women’s basketball team extended their winning streak to five games with their 62-49 win over Xavier University of Louisiana.

How it Happened:

Xavier was the first to put points on the board until Ty Doucet responded for UL’s first points at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter. After hitting three straight field goals, the Ragin’ Cajuns proceeded to shoot 0-of-4 from the field. A Kendall Bess jumper and Alexandria Goodly layup stopped the drought to send UL to the second quarter with a 14-12 lead.

UL guard Jasmine Thomas opened the second with a 3-pointer  to give the Ragin’ Cajuns their largest lead of the game. Xavier tied the game at 17 after UL went on another scoring drought, one that lasted a little over two minutes. UL’s defense settled in during the course of the second quarter by holding Xavier without a point for over five minutes of gametime. They took advantage of their defense with a 7-0 run. UL went into halftime with a 32-24 lead.

The Ragin’ Cajuns increased their lead to 14 points midway through the third quarter. UL blew the game open after the halftime break behind 9-of-19 shooting from the field. The lead grew to 15 points going into the final quarter.

After a high scoring third quarter, the offense for both teams slowed down in the fourth. Both Xavier and UL had only eight total points with 4:19 left in the game. It was the lowest combined scoring output between the teams, but  it did not matter as UL cruised down the stretch for a 62-49 win.

Player of the Game: Jomyra Mathis

UL’s junior guard/forward Jomyra Mathis led the team with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Mathis also added two rebounds and two assists to her stat line en route to victory.

Big Number:7

The Ragin’ Cajuns have a chance to match last season’s win total with a win in their next game against North Texas. UL has won five consecutive games to boost their overall record to 6-1 after going 7-23 last year.
