Even before the two fighters entered the Octagon on Saturday night, the expectations were sky high for the lightweight main event between Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker. After five rounds, the two exceeded expectations and put on a strong contender for fight of the year with the Lafayette native coming out on top.

From the second the first round started, the two lightweights came out swinging and Dan Hooker took control early on in the contest landing tons of significant strikes. Poirier was on the proverbial ropes for much of the second round, but the moment he was able to get some space, he fired back with a flurry of punches and by the end of the round, both fighters were cut near the eye.

After largely being a fight in a phone booth, the Lafayette native took over and started to work the ground game and attempting to lock in several submissions and slow down the pace of the fight.

It was more of the same in the fourth round with Poirier locking in an omoplata late, but Hooker slides out of the hold to keep it going into the fifth and final round. That final round saw both empty the gas tank, but it was clear that Dustin Poirier was the winner of the fight with a late flurry of punches.
