While the end result was all too similar, the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (3-3, 1-2 Sun Belt) kept it competitive throughout the ballgame in Boone, North Carolina as Appalachian State (5-1, 3-0 Sun Belt) came away with a 27-17 win.
After an early back-and-forth, the Cajuns forced the Mountaineers to turn it over on downs in their own territory after a ten-play drive. However, they would cough up the football two plays later to give the ball right back to App State.
The Mountaineers drew first blood with a two-yard run from Darrynton Evans to make it 7-0. Louisiana quickly responded with a march down the field that ended with a 38-yard pass from Levi Lewis to Elijah Mitchell to knot things up at 7.
The proverbial tug of war continued with both teams nailing field goals, but Zac Thomas was able to get the Mountaineers out in front just before halftime with a 20 yard pass to Evans to make it 17-10.
The Mountaineers started things off in the second half with a quick march down the field highlighted by a 65-yard run from Evans.
After another App State field goal, the Cajins made it a ten-point game in the final moments with a 27-yard run from Trey Ragas. They did recover the inside kick, but were unable to close that gap as time continued to tick away as the Mountaineers kept their perfect record against conference opponents intact.
The Cajuns will return to the friendly confines on Saturday when they take on Arkansas State (4-3, 1-2 Sun Belt) with kickoff set for 6 pm.
