After missing the second half of Sunday’s contest against the San Francisco 49ers due to injury, the New Orleans Saints could be without Drew Brees for a while.

According to Ed Werder, Brees suffered multiple rib fractures on both sides of his chest and a collapsed lung on the right side.

Drew Brees suffered two fractured ribs Sunday against the 49ers and three others on the right side the previous week against the Bucs that were not seen on X-ray until today. Brees has been advised to be cautious with the collapsed lung.

“He took a heavy shot in the first half,” coach Sean Payton said after the team’s 27-10 victory over the 49ers. “He felt it was really impacting him … (and said) ‘I don’t feel like I’m capable of playing.’ And that happens sometimes.”

This puts the Saints in a position to start former number-one pick Jameis Winston this Sunday when they square off with the Atlanta Falcons. Winston went 6-of-10 for 63 yards in the second half and orchestrated a drive in the fourth quarter that resulted in an Alvin Kamara touchdown to seal the win.
